Thinking of Lower Scores?

The Gary Player Golf Experience is SA’s premier teaching academy. Our pro, Gabba Wessels, is an AA Class PGA professional with more than 6 years teaching experience and his offer for this week is his blueprint for the ideal CHIPPING SET-UP…

Firstly, let’s understand that we need to hit down on the ball on chip shots in order to ensure effective use of the loft automatically built into wedges. Hitting down will also help to strike the ball with the sweet spot of the wedge and the correct setup will make it much easier to achieve this.

As you can see in the pictures, the priorities for chipping setup are as follows:

  1. Stance slightly narrower than shoulder width – for a stable lower body.
  2. Ball position slightly back of center – for a cleaner strike.
  3. +/- 70% of body weight on the leading foot (push your hips towards the target) – to ensure a quiet lower half.
  4. Hands and arms forward with body weight (hands in front of the ball, left arm and shaft in a straight line) – to effect a downward blow.
  5. Grip a bit lower on the club – to improve club control.
