COIL & LOAD
One of the most important moves on the backswing is to rotate your shoulders over your right side. This will ensure that you are storing power during your backswing and in turn will facilitate the transfer of power through your impact and follow through.
Here is a great drill to help you to perfect this all-important move:
- Place a club or an alignment stick on the ground in line with your right ankle (arrow 1).
- Make a full shoulder turn laterally so that your left shoulder crosses the line of the club or alignment stick (arrow 2 - shoulder crosses line of club).
Be careful not to move your right hip beyond the shaft in order to prevent swaying of the hips (arrow 3 - hips remain stable). Try to get the feeling of coiling your upper body against a stable lower body.
- Hold this position until you feel tension on your right side – this is an indication that you are coiling correctly.
When you have practiced this move a few times, execute a full swing with the focus on “loading” still fresh in your mind.
