Find your ideal swing plane

It is important to understand that the direction that your shaft follows during your swing (commonly referred to as the “swing plane”) determines the direction that your ball begins its flight from your club-face.

It therefore stands to reason that your swing plane needs to be on the correct path for your individual body shape and height.

How can you determine what’s right for you when you are out practising on the range? This is a question which challenges most golfers and Scott has a simple solution for you, which can be easily implemented on your own:

  • Place a shaft or alignment stick behind your ball at address down the target line and a second shaft or alignment stick under your club as illustrated in pic 1.
  • Swing back half-way and check that the shaft on your club is pointing along the extension of your target line (pic 2).
  • Check again for the same result at the top of the back-swing (pic 3).
  • Repeat this a few times to gain the feeling of where your swing plane is.
  • Remove the shaft from your club, but not the one on your target line, then practice a few swings with the feeling and visual fresh in your mind.
