The Real Secret to Golf Fitness

In today’s day and age, professionals are trying to get ahead of the pack by bringing out the “latest and greatest” tip to improve your driving distance, putting accuracy or greens in regulation. The one aspect that cannot be ignored is that the body is what controls the golf club!

The main difference between professionals and amateurs is that amateurs have a day job that pays for the golf. This day job often involves sitting for hours either in meetings, behind the computer or in your car. After all that sitting at work, we are so tired when we get home that we sit on the couch…vegetate watching TV, and then crawl into bed in a fetal position (which is also a sitting position) until the alarm goes off in the morning. The point is we spend most of our time in a crouched, hunched over position.

The first thing we do when we stand up from a prolonged period of sitting is stretch…which is the bodies’ way of fighting that poor sitting posture. This is the real secret to golf fitness.

Flexibility and mobility are the key factors in keeping the body moving. Without the range of motion, the body’s movements are limited, which results in compensations…and ultimately, injury.

So what do we need to stretch?

A detailed assessment of your bodies’ movement will highlight where you need flexibility most, as everyone’s body is different. Group stretching classes are good, but not necessarily specific for you or your bodies’ needs.
