Your mobility is like a chain-reaction

In the midst of the latest golfing popularity bubble, you may have heard the term “Mobility” oft bandied about. To help you to easily understand the importance of mobility, consider that an efficient golf swing requires a balance between mobility and stability, with the required kinematic sequence from the ground up as follows:

Foot – STABLE; Ankle – MOBILE; Knee – STABLE; Hips – MOBILE; Lower Back – STABLE; Thoracic Spine – MOBILE; Scapular Region – STABLE; Shoulders – MOBILE.

If the sequence is lost, compensation with debilitating effects will result, for example a limitation in hip or thoracic spine mobility will cause the lower back to sacrifice stability in order to gain more mobility. This in turn will limit swing effectiveness and create the possibility of Lower Back injury.

Mobility limitations will predict instability – think about your hip joint…

Without appropriate Range of Motion in this area, loading into the trail hip during the backswing & transferring weight into the lead hip during the downswing would not be possible, resulting in a serious loss of power!

Another example of where mobility restrictions affect swing performance is in the shoulder joint. If Range of Motion in this area is compromised, setting the club in a good position at the top of the back swing may not be possible and your chances of swinging “on plane” are almost nil.

So, armed with this newfound awareness, why not “mobilise” your dialling finger now and call for your Golf Fitness consultation on 011 545 8618 – it’s just a “chain reaction”…
