Develop Imagination around the greens!

At GPGE we get a lot of questions about which club is best to chip with. The answer is that different clubs work for different situations. A proficient short game artist will be happy to use any club in his bag, depending on a number of factors, such as:

  • Distance from the green
  • Distance from the edge of the green to the flag
  • Your lie or the pace & slope of the green

The major difference to consider when choosing a club to chip with is the flight-to-roll ratio. For example, your lob wedge is designed to fly 80% and roll 20%, whilst a club like your 7-iron will be the opposite at 20% flight and 80% roll. To evaluate the ratios of your clubs, here is an exercise you can perform next time you visit the World of Chipping:

  • Visualise a landing area about 1m on from the edge of the green (see pic 1).
  • Choose your clubs from 8-iron down to lob or sand-wedge.

  • Chip until you are satisfied that at least 1 ball with each club has landed in your chosen

area. Note the distance the ball has rolled with each club (pic 2).
In this way you will gain a feel for the various types of chip shots you can execute on the golf course.
Armed with this information, remember that practice makes perfect, so repeat chip shots with all the clubs you have tried
