The Pre-shot routine

Exciting times have arrived, as our students are now ready to take their changes to the golf course! We explain that they need a repeatable and consistent pre-shot routine to help them execute their planned shots. It is important for them to understand the principles of best practice for the pre-shot routine, as follows:

  • Firstly for golfers working on new swing techniques, focus should be on the physical and technical elements at this time, rather than the mental dimension.
  • The pre-shot routine does not take place over the ball. It happens about 2m behind the ball before the address position, where analytical and technical decisions are made.
  • Once over the ball, the target is the only focus.

Our students should also understand the major objectives of the pre-shot routine, which are:

  •  Muscle activation, ie. preparing your muscles to execute the planned shot.
  • Incorporation of a new swing pattern.

Case Study 1, ANRI:

Technical problem: Lack of club head speed
Physical limitation: Lack of hip stability

Anri will make 2 backswings focusing on keeping her trail leg stable, not straightening it. From the top of her second backswing she will perform a pelvic punch focusing on her right glute squeezing into a full finish

Case Study 2, GARY:

Technical problem: Swaying off the ball
Physical limitation: Lack of hip mobility

Gary will make 2 backswings focusing on keeping the weight on the inside of his trail foot. From the top of his second backswing she will perform a pelvic punch to a full finish

Case Study 3, TJ:

Technical problem: Swing plane consistency
Physical limitation: Scapular stability

TJ will tuck his shirt in under his trail armpit. He will then make two full practice swings focusing on keeping his shirt tucked in.
